It’s official. Social media isn’t a fad, one billion have spoken. Social media has seen a surge with its now 800 million people on Facebook and 250 million users on Twitter. For brands, this has meant immediate adoption of Social Media 2.0 and the need for more than just a mere presence in the space. In order to be successful, brands now have to find ways to stand out among the sea of sameness and develop ways for monetization.

This dilemma has left marketers with the need to find new hires capable of managing all that’s encompassed in the social media world. The boom has created opportunity and is challenging brands to find the right individual for the job. Brands must be able to hire individuals who can both confidently speak on behalf of the brand and live the brand, within the social space.

Throughout the past two years, we’ve received countless resumes from individuals looking to work at Digital Royalty and have built relationships with companies of all sizes, including top Fortune 500 companies who are seeking candidates. This is where our newest division, Digital Royalty Human Resources (dRHR) comes into play.

dRHR matches brands with invaluable individuals who desire a position in social media. Through a custom social recruitment process, it allows us to identify strengths and weaknesses, and in the end, offer reliable candidates with a dRHR stamp of approval. Brands have hired us to recruit and train perfect-fit individuals for major brands. We’re now taking it to the next level in launching an official division dedicated to this service. The goal is not only to recruit and fill the position within a month, but to transition the new-hire into their job with the social media knowledge and tools necessary so they can hit the ground running. This is achieved through a unique Digital Royalty University training program fit for the individual and company. Our philosophy is that social media impacts all aspects of business, any every position throughout the company should be educated. We’re the social media matchmakers, between brands and qualified candidates.

Digital Royalty has worked closely with Shaquille O’Neal for more than two years to develop his online brand and media network comprised of 6 million friends. Over the course of Shaquille’s historic career in the NBA spanning nearly two decades, he’s had plenty of BIG nicknames:  Big Diesel, The Big Shaqtus and The Big Shamrock. But like many of his fans, Digital Royalty has always seen him as The Big Social Media Center.

As the most-followed American athlete and first verified celebrity on Twitter, Shaquille has used social media to deliver value directly to his fans when, where and how they wanted to receive the value. He did this before it was the popular thing to do. Few celebrities “got it” early on. From performing Random Acts of Shaqness and bantering with fans to posting hilarious videos and inspirational quotes, he has an innate ability to make his millions of Facebook fans and Twitter followers feel like close friends. He has allowed his friends to see the person behind the personality.

Shaquille naturally wanted to deliver the biggest announcement of his career  – his retirement – directly to his fans, the people who have made the past 19 years possible. Digital Royalty Founder and CEO, Amy Jo Martin, was with Shaquille to help him activate the announcement and engage with fans afterward. In case you missed it, view Shaquille’s retirement announcement is here.

A letter written in 1993 from Shaquille’s long time mentor, Coach Dale Brown, was posted to Shaquille’s Facebook fan page for his fans to read along with his retirement announcement. Digital Royalty is launching Shaquille’s Social Media Museum and allowing fans to take a trip down memory lane in the coming days. He will be touring his fans around his home via www.Tout.com/shaq videos and sharing memories, memorabilia and Shaqisms.

Within five minutes of the announcement, #ShaqRetires was the number one worldwide trending topic on Twitter. With more than 175 million users on Twitter who send 150 million+ tweets per day, that speaks for itself. The world was watching and helping him celebrate virtually. Digital Royalty’s Founder and CEO, Amy Jo Martin, was quoted on SportsCenter, ”Shaquille is the media. He didn’t need a press release so the media could tell the world he’s retiring in their words. He told his millions of friends directly, in his own words. The social influence he has built has given him the freedom to leapfrog the middleman.”

So what’s next for Shaquille? A hunt for a new nickname and maybe Kazaam 2? A rejuvenated rap career? Backup dancing for his buddy Justin Bieber or another stint with the Jabbawockeez? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Shaquille’s fans will be the first to know.

It’s been an honor to work with someone who truly understands the power of being human and rising above a brand to deliver value how, when and where fans want it. Digital Royalty is excited to play a part in the next chapter of Shaquille’s career. “I’ve had the honor to join Shaquille in his journey over the past few years. His number one goal is to make people smile and laugh. Lucky for us, he will now have even more time to entertain all of his friends.” says AmyJo Martin.

On any given day you can find the Digital Royalty team stationed across the country, taking conference calls in unique places and multitasking. Between our iPad, iPhones, iTunes and other i-prefixed devices that virtually guide us through life, we thought we’d share our favorite apps that help keep us organized and efficient. Not an Apple user? We have two resident Android users and even a BlackBerry loyalist. Check out the full list of our favorites below:

Amy Jo Martin: Evernote

My 75 Evernote notebooks and 1,000+ notes are always with me on my iPhone, iPad and Mac, and they’re always synced.  In a matter of seconds, I can pull up notes on any of my devices, whether it’s a voice note I took a stoplight or notes taken from an airplane during a last-call epiphany before takeoff. I can even access my notes via in-flight WiFi. I was recently in an annual planning meeting with a client and was about to answer a question about last year’s meeting in about 20 seconds thanks to Evernote.

Alana Golob: Skype

Skype is a simple tool that makes working with clients nationally and internationally much easier. I’ve worked closely for the last few months with a client in Italy, holding conference calls, tutorials and brainstorms solely via Skype. In addition, with the growth of dR’s educational division, Digital Royalty University (dRU), Skype has become a vital tool for speaking engagements with universities and corporations. Skype webinars are an easy and cost-effective way to connect with dRU students without jeopardizing personalization, accessibility and quality of conversation.

Kristin Adams: MLB.com At Bat

Working in the sports world, I have to stay up to date on what’s happening in all the different leagues and the MLB.com At Bat 11 is the best app put out by a pro sports league. You can get information you’re looking for quickly and have a full recap of that day’s results and highlights. And even better I can even follow tweets for a team without leaving the app. At Bat enhances every type of ‘viewing’ experience for its fans whether they are at the stadium or checking scores at work.

Kirsten Stubbs: Mashable

Our industry is evolving at an incredibly rapid pace. The only way to stay relevant  is through constant curiosity and vigilant learning. Mashable is hands-down my favorite app (and news outlet) for social media, tech and digital marketing news.  Mashable provides the perfect mix of industry research, tech reviews, thought-provoking case studies and viral cat videos. The content reminds me to constantly raise the bar, color outside the lines and never be stagnant in best practices. Plus, the mobile app is clean, convenient and perfect for reading during a layover or while in line at the DMV.

Dustin Thompson: Dropbox

Dropbox allows you to designate a desktop folder (or sub-directory) to synchronize.  It’s a cloud-based storage system that allows you access to your files on-the-go. On the iPhone, Dropbox allows you to upload and download files, and provides links to individual files for collaborators to share. For a business user on the go, the ability to provide the link through e-mail is critical, and the ability to view the files can be a lifesaver.

Britt Johnson: Jorte Calendar

My favorite business application is the Jorte calendar system. I was once a firm supporter of the paper planner until I found this app. It simulates the feeling of hand-writing your daily tasks, and presents them in an easy-to-read fashion. As a self-described “organizational freak” I was also impressed by the customizable interface and color coding options. Best of all, it’s free!
